Leather Scrap Packs: Great Way to Try A Variety of Leather Types

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

Do you have the desire to try leather on your projects, but don't know where to begin? Have you tried to shop for leather online but felt overwhelmed by the various types and options? Do you sometimes feel it is difficult to know which leather to buy for your projects? Are you concerned that you might not be able to sew leather on your specific machine? Well, if you answered yes to any of these, I recommend grabbing a leather scrap pack. Leather scraps can be purchased from a large number of sellers, but did you know we offer a variety of leather scrap packs that have been tailored to meet specific needs? Continue reading to learn more.

The "Discovery" Scrap Pack

The "Discovery" scrap pack is designed with the person that might be new to working with leather in mind (or those that would like to try different types of leather without making a huge investment in large hides). Each pack has a mix of leather - from soft and lightweight (2.5-3.5 oz), to firm and slightly thicker (4-5.5 oz), and some in between! You will likely find a range of oil-tanned leather, upholstery weight leather, and veg-tanned leather that can be used for different small projects (e.g., card holders, chapstick holders, zipper overlays, zipper tabs, webbing strap accents, etc.). The goal is to provide you with a mix of leather that will allow you to get an idea of what you like using for different types of projects and what your specific machine can handle.

Did you know you can find free tutorials for small leather projects right here on our blog? Most of the cuts in the discovery pack will be at least large enough for using with these tutorials as well as other small projects. Take a look at the video clip below to get an idea of what the "Discovery" scrap packs look like.

The "Littles" Scrap Pack

The "Littles" scrap pack. These packs are a random mix of smaller cuts of some of the same leather that is used for the "Discovery" scrap packs. They include sizes that are not huge, but that can still be used for various small projects (e.g., card holders, chapstick holders, zipper overlays, zipper tabs, webbing strap accents, etc.). View the video below to get an idea of what a typical "Littles" pack might look like.

The "Mixed Bag" Scrap Pack

The "Mixed Bag" scrap pack is a gallon size bag stuffed with off-cuts of veg-tanned leather. Many are the end-cuts that we have to trim off the hides to get a straight edge when we prepare to cut straps. As a result, quite a few of the of the pieces are long, narrow strips that you can likely get a few wrist straps or shorter handles cut from. Some pieces are smaller cuts that can be used for cutting strap connectors, washers, key fobs, etc. This is typically heavier weight (4.5-8 oz), quality veg-tanned leather in a mix of colors. Of course, veg-tanned leather makes me really happy because the edges can be burnished beautifully without a ton of effort.

The "Leather Strips" Scrap Pack

The "Leather Strips" scrap packs can either come with multiple strips of leather in various lengths and sizes, or one longer strip. The packs that include multiple pieces can be a mix of lengths, but almost all should be usable for things such as handles on boxy bags and dopp kits, key fobs, strap connectors, punching washers, etc.

The packs with one single strip are typically a minimum of 40", but they can be as long as 55"-80". These longer strips are typically either discontinued colors, slightly imperfect (minor scratches, slightly miscut in some area, etc.), or a weight/temper that we are not currently offering. Take a look below to see what a typical pack could look like.

The "Tassel Cuts" Scrap Pack

The "Tassel Cuts" scrap packs include small cuts of extra lightweight leather (i.e. lambskin, goat skin, etc.) that are the perfect size for making small tassels to accent your bags. Keep in mind these packs are mixed colors and various lengths, widths, types, and weights. Take a look at the video to get an idea of what the small tassel scrap packs look like.

Some tassel cuts are longer than others. You will receive a pack with at least 5 pieces in mixed sizes and colors. These are good for smaller tassels like the type you would attach to the strap connector or zipper pull on your bag. These little cuts are also great for using to wrap the raw ends of your webbing straps.

The "Webbing Strap Ends" Scrap Pack

The "Webbing Strap End" scrap packs are small scraps of lightweight leather (e.g., lambskin, goatskin, upholstery weight, etc.) that can be used for wrapping the ends of webbing straps, zipper tabs, or zipper pulls.

Again, these are small cuts. You will get an assortment of colors. Some pieces are larger than others, but all are usable for the intended purpose.

The "Practice Leather" Scrap Pack (FREEBIE)

The "Practice Leather" scrap pack. These FREE packs are smaller cuts of some of the leather pieces that were cut from the portion of hides that were imperfect (due to stains, brands, etc.). These are not good for projects, but rather for testing your machine, getting your tension right, etc.

Have questions about a specific leather you received in your pack? Feel free to message me. I am always here to help!
