Making a Leather ID Lanyard

Updated: May 10, 2023

Lanyards are very handy for keeping up with work/school identification, hotel keys, and other cards. There are numerous patterns and tutorials out there for making lanyards, but we thought we would share this version we like to make using leather scraps. These are cute, easy to make, and they require very little materials.

Here's What We Used (see link below for downloadable templates)

  1. Leather Scraps 4-5 oz Semi-Firm (we use veg-tanned leather)

    1. Front Window Panel - 4" W x 2 ⅞” H

    2. Rear Panel - 4 ½” W x 4” H

    3. D-Ring Connector - ½” W x 1 ½” H

  2. Leather Scraps 1-2 oz (we used lambskin)

    1. Scrap for Wrapping Strap Ends - ¾” W x 2 ½” H

    2. (Optional) Rear Lining - 5" W x 4 ¾” H

  3. Clear Vinyl (12 gauge or thicker)

    1. Front Window - 4" W x 2 ¾” H (or larger, then trim to fit later)

  4. 1 Yard LIGHTWEIGHT 1" Webbing (Substitutes: 1" Twill Tape or ½" Flat Cord)

    1. Strap - 1" W x 34" H

  5. Double Cap Rivets (we used ONE 6mm & ONE 8mm)

  6. ONE ½” Wide Swivel Clasp

  7. ONE ½” D-Ring

  8. ⅛” Double-Sided Tape or Leather Glue

  9. Ruler & Rotary Cutter or Craft Knife

  10. Rivet Setting Tool & Mallet

  11. Hollow/Drive/Rotary Punch for Making Rivet Holes (we used a 2.5mm)

  12. (Optional) Burnishing Agent or Edge Paint

  13. (Optional) Arc-Punch for Curving Corners

*In the video, the lanyard was made using the measurements, a ruler, and rotary cutter. However, click here for FREE downloadable templates, or here if you would prefer to purchase acrylic templates.
